BELLE GLADE – A Belle Glade man is accused of breaking into a woman’s home, stabbing her and attempting to shoot her.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office report, Crofton Harris, 47, has been charged with attempted murder with a weapon, armed burglary with a battery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and shooting within an occupied dwelling. No bond was set.

On Sunday, Sept. 5, PBSO received a call in reference to a shooting. Deputies found an injured woman who was transported for medical care. The woman reportedly told deputies she was attacked by Harris who broke into her home. She has an active restraining order against Harris.

According to the report, the woman said she was asleep when she was awakened by Harris tapping her with a knife and he began to stab her. She said she kicked at Harris in an attempt to get away. She was reportedly stabbled on her arm, leg and hand. Harris then reportedly pulled a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at her head. She said she heard a clicking noise but the gun did not fire. They fought over the gun and during the struggle, the gun went off, the report continues. She said her daughter was able to get Harris off her. Harris then put the gun to his head and attempted to shoot himself but the gun would not fire, she continued. She said Harris took off his jacket and wrapped her elbow to stop the bleeding and left.

The daughter told deputies she was sleeping when she heard her mother scream for help. She said she saw Harris on top of her mother and tried to get him off her. She said as she was trying to break them up, Harris discharged his handgun. She saw the blood and thought her mother had been shot. She said Harris left with a handgun and a “cane knife.”

Detectives interviewed Harris who reportedly said he entered the residence through an unlocked window. He said he found the knife in the house, and woke up the woman by tapping her with the knife. He said they began to argue and he accidentally cut her. He denied several times that he had a gun.

Deputies recovered a .380 shell casing and found a gunshot defect to the couch where the projectile entered.

Detectives confirmed the woman had an active restraining order against Harris.
