CLEWISTON– The Clewiston High School Tiger varsity soccer team is set to hold its senior night this week, during their home game against Glades Day on Jan. 20.

The Tigers will honor eight seniors this year, including team captain Josue Gonzalez, Osvaldo Cervantes, Diego Paniagua, Jose Fajardo, Jesus Hernandez, Miguel Figueroa, Abenamar Perez, and Jose Herrera.

Clewiston’s first game back after two weeks off came on Jan. 8 against a 7-1-3 Lely Trojans. Lely took advantage of Clewiston’s rust and beat the Tigers 5-2. Junior Emilio Rico and senior Josue Gonzalez had the two Tiger goals against the Trojans.

The loss dropped Clewiston to 5-3-2 for the season, but the Tigers managed to bounce back in their next two games. Clewiston won two back-to-back road games to go to 7-3-2, beating Glades Day 8-0 and edging out Lake Placid 3-2.

Josue Gonzalez led the Tigers in scoring against Glades Day with three goals, followed by Emilio Rico with two. Goalie Isaias Raya had six saves to secure the shutout defensively for the Tigers.

Clewiston jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against the Lake Placid Dragons in the first half. The Dragons came soaring back in the second half with two goals, but the Tigers managed to match them goal for goal to secure the win.

Tigers coach Skip Crawford is hoping his team can stay healthy for the playoffs this year.

“Injuries happen, you know,” said Crawford. “We’re a small school so I don’t have a ton of guys. It’s a good sized team but if three or four guys get injured or hurt it really puts a bind on the team. Right now we’re a lot healthier than we’ve ever been this time of year.”

The Tigers’ senior night is set for Jan. 20 at 6:30 p.m. when they take on the Glades Day Gators in Clewiston.
