Rural areas still lag behind state average in covid vaccinations

Florida’s COVID-19 new case positivity rate dropped to 3.4% last week. As of the report released by the Florida Department of Health on Oct. 22, all of the Lake Okeechobee area counties had positivity rates below 10% last week.

Statewide, 73% of Florida residents have been vaccinated for COVID-19. Nationwide, about 75% of adults in the United States have been vaccinated with at least one dose.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 99% of those killed by COVID-19 were unvaccinated. The CDC advises COVID-19 vaccinations are the more effective way to prevent serious illness, hospitalizations and deaths from the virus.

As of the Oct. 22 update from FDOH:

• Collier County has 76% vaccinated and a 3.1% new case positivity rate with 184 new covid cases Oct. 15-21. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Collier County had 35 new covid hospitalizations for the week.

• Glades County has 52% vaccinated and a 6.8% new case positivity rate, with three new cases for the week. According to the CDC, Glades County had no new covid hospitalizations for the week.

• Hendry County has 59% vaccinated and a 6.7% new case positivity rate, with 32 new cases for the week. According to the CDC, Hendry County had two new covid hospitalizations for the week.

• Martin County has 69% vaccinated and a 4.6% new case positivity rate, with 111 new cases for the week. According to the CDC, Martin County had 19 new covid hospitalizations.

• Okeechobee County has 50% vaccinated and a 4.3% new case positivity rate, with 21 new cases for the week. According to the CDC, Okeechobee County had three new covid hospitalizations for the week.

• Palm Beach County has 75% vaccinated and 3.4% new positivity rate, with 1,062 new cases for the week. According to the CDC, Palm Beach County had 117 new covid cases for the week.

As of Oct. 21, 2021, the COVID-19 death toll in Florida was 58,803. Statewide 1.6% of those who tested positive for the virus have died. Men are more likely to die from covid than women. Statewide, 2.0% of men who tested positive have died, while 1.4% of women who tested positive died.

Florida deaths have included:

• Under age 16: 29;
• Ages 16-29: 408;

• Ages 30-39: 1,055;
• Ages 40-49: 2,564;
• Ages 5-59: 5,807;
• Ages 60-65: 4,796;
• Ages 65 and older: 44,144.
