‘Get Out the Muck Vote’ contest could win you cash

BELLE GLADE — For anyone living in the Glades region of Palm Beach County who’s doing something extra to get family, relatives, neighbors, friends and acquaintances all to cast a ballot in the 2020 general election, you might be able to win a few C-notes doing so.

The aim of this unique effort is to encourage the people of the Glades to speak up for themselves, their families, their needs and interests, and is a coordinated effort to increase Glades voter participation in politics.

This would apply to people who volunteer to drive others to the Belle Glade early polling locations for early voting, which in Palm Beach County ends on Sunday, Nov. 1. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. That means family, friends, whoever — if a person brings himself (if voting) and four other registered voters, or five registered voters who then vote, he or she is eligible to participate. Or, presumably, even charities or civic organizations that organize voting drives could have entrants.

Tammy Jackson-Moore, co-founder of the Guardians of the Glades, described how this challenge works in an announcement on her personal social media page Wednesday, Oct. 21, to inform the public of this particular campaign going on in the waning days before the general election.

It’s called the “Get Out the Muck Vote Challenge.”

She wrote: “Are you working to get people to the polls? You might be interested...”

Here’s the setup, according to the flier created for the event: A winner will be announced daily at 8 a.m. on 107.1 FM radio, and that person will be rewarded each day at 10:30 a.m. at the Belle Glade Branch of the Palm Beach County Library System, at 725 N.W. Fourth Street in the city.

The “Get Out the Muck Vote Challenge” is a Tri-City (Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay), two-week voting challenge that started Tuesday, Oct. 20. This challenge is cosponsored by JPDT Holdings Corporation and the Jackson-Moore Group.

Jackson-Moore said, “We want to encourage people to just get involved and help their neighbors get to the polls, because a lot of people (here) don’t have their own personal transportation, so we want to encourage people to help out as much as they possibly can.”

The JPDT group, she explained, is a bunch of former and current football players from the region who are trying to do some redevelopment in the Glades. They’re involved in the affordable housing push going on in the Tri-Cities.

She added: “They came and approached us and wanted to know what we were doing and what they could do to help us to encourage and get people out to vote. We think it’s going to encourage people to be part of the voting process, to express their rights, so we came up with this concept. And, you know, not only is it a contest where people can win, it’s an opportunity to really, really help their neighbors and help their community members get to the voting polls, especially those who do not have transportation.”

The “Team Glades” directions for this event are as follows:

• Participants can win a $200 daily prize or the grand prize of $500.

• To win the $200 prize, “participants must bring as many people as possible to the early voting site located at the Belle Glade Library,” and the one “who brings the most people on that day will win the $200.”

• The $500 grand prize will go to the participant who brought the most people to the polling place throughout the 14 days.

• Rules: 1.) Driver must bring a minimum of five people to qualify for a daily prize; 2.) Before voting, participants will go to the tent located outside of the polling site and check in (please have driver license/ID ready); and 3.) After voting, participants will go back to the tent and show their voting stickers.
