BELLE GLADE- The Glades Day Gators varsity baseball team finished first in their district this season, with a 13-7 record.

That record earned the Gators a bye in the first round of the district playoffs.

The Gators got off to a good start this year, winning seven games in a row in the beginning of the season. During that win streak the Gators shutout two teams, beating Moore Haven 18-0 and Sheridan Hills Christian 15-0.

Glades Day recognized the two seniors on their team, Frankie Barnes and Mason Matos, ahead of their game against Palm Beach Lakes on April 25. The Gators went on to win that game 15-5. Junior Marquis Clarke led the team with three hits and 5 RBIs. Clarke also had two home runs in the win. Freshman Adrian Baeza hit triples for 2 RBIs against Palm Beach Lakes.

Barnes led the team in stolen bases on the night, with four.

The Glades Day baseball program under head coach Rene Leon Jr. Is coming off a 12-8 record last season. That record helped them secure the ability to host the district quarterfinal game in Belle Glade. The Berean Christian Bulldogs made the trip to south of the lake to take on the Gators in the opening round of the playoffs, and Glades Day took an 11-3 win in the district quarterfinal.

This season, however, the Gators will get to enjoy a first round bye in the playoffs. They will play either Wildwood or Pahokee in the district semifinal on May 2.
