Gove teacher receives Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture Award

Posted
GAINESVILLE – Florida Agriculture in the Classroom (FAITC) is excited to announce that four deserving teachers were awarded Florida’s 2022 Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture Award. Each year FAITC, a Gainesville based, non-profit organization, selects teachers based on the inventive ways they use agriculture in the classrooms to teach the Florida State Standards.

"We applaud these teachers for emphasizing agriculture in their classrooms and for making it a priority to teach students and future leaders about where their food comes from,” said Tori Rumenik, Chair of the FAITC Board of Directors and a representative of the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association.

Shelly Miller, the 2022 overall teacher winner, is a STEM teacher at Gove Elementary School in Palm Beach County. Miller implements lesson plans throughout the school year that educate her Kindergarten through fifth grade students about Florida agriculture; these lessons cover career opportunities, economic impacts, compliance with environmental preservation standards, sustainability of farming and how to be stewards of the land. Her students learn about nutrition using MyPlate, they grow peppers in their school garden and partner with the Loggerhead Marine Life Center to feed those peppers to sick sea turtles. This year her classes adopted a dairy cow named Cupcake to learn about how the dairy industry works in Florida. Shelly’s older students learn about farming technology through information from her local John Deere dealer.

She is passionate about helping her students understand how significant agriculture is and how prevalent it is in our state and community. She will go on to compete for the National Excellence in Teaching about Agriculture Award for 2023.

Also honored were teachers from Nassau, Lee and Polk Counties.

All winners receive an honorarium and a free trip to the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference where they are recognized. The 2022 National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference ‘Empire State of Agriculture’ is June 28 – July 1 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

FAITC funds programs like the Florida Excellence in Teaching about Agriculture Awards with the proceeds it receives from the sales of the agriculture specialty license plate known as the Ag Tag. Its mission is to be a leading collaborator and trusted provider of PreK-12 educational resources and teacher professional development programs focusing on awareness and knowledge of agriculture and natural resources in Florida.
