MOORE HAVEN – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that due to a rapid increase in the lake level, tussock material and invasive floating plant material is causing frequent blockages in canals, including the rim canal, around the lake.
Tussocks are thick mats of plant material.
As of Sept. 23, there was a tussock blocking the rim canal just south of Old Sportsman’s canal. Motorboats may have issues getting through, reported USACE Invasive Species Management Branch Biologist Jessica M. Fair. Boats will be deployed as soon as possible to spray and dislodge the material, she said.
As lake levels continue to rise and winds remain strong, these blockages could become even more frequent. Depending on the type of material, size and weather patterns, the blockage may last a few hours but could also last days or even longer, she explained.
