Pahokee plans centennial celebration

Posted

PAHOKEE – Pahokee will celebrate it’s 100th anniversary next year. The Pahokee City Commission will appoint members to a committee to plan special events.

At their Oct. 26 meeting, city commissioners agreed each of the five commissioners will appoint up to two people to the centennial committee. The committee will chose a chairperson from among their group. The chairman will report updates on celebration plans to the commission.

Those interested in volunteering to serve on the committee should contact a city commissioner. Commissioners will bring their nominations to the next meeting.

The commission initially considered having the chairperson appointed by the city commission. Mayor Keith Babb suggested the committee be allowed to chose their own chair.

City Commissioner Clara Murvin said in the past, this type of committee was chaired by a city staff member or someone from the economic development group. The commission voted 4-1 to have the committee chose their own chair, with Commissioner Sarah Perez casting the one dissenting vote.

Those not chosen for the main committee will still have the opportunity to volunteer. Subcommittees will be formed to help with each special event for the centennial year.

“It’s going to be a big celebration and we want as much input as possible,” said Babb.
