LAKE WORTH — Academic researchers, industry professionals and student ethical hackers will examine the latest cybercrime threats and the career skills needed to stop them at the Cybersecurity Symposium, Wednesday, April 12, from 5 to 9 p.m., at Palm Beach State College’s James L. Wattenbarger Conference Center (CBP 103), located in the Center for Bachelor’s Programs on the Lake Worth campus, 4200 Congress Ave.

Co-hosted by PBSC and the School District of Palm Beach County, the symposium is free and open to the public. Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance. Sign up at palmbeachstate.edu/events/Cybersecurity.

This event is ideal for anyone interested in learning more about cybersecurity career pathways and how PBSC’s associate and bachelor’s degrees and certificate programs prepare students with the latest tools and technologies to enter the high-demand cybersecurity workforce.

Symposium speakers from PBSC and other leaders in higher education, private industry and government will discuss their work and personal career journeys. They include:

• Thomas Dearden, Ph.D., assistant professor and cybercrime specialist, Virginia Tech

• Nathan Fisk, Ph.D., assistant professor of cybersecurity education, University of South Florida
• Steve Lindsay, director, Critical Infrastructure Initiatives, XTec Inc.
• Luis Moreno, cybersecurity and infrastructure manager, Palm Beach County

“The symposium will serve as a foundation for information exchange, problem-solving and making cybersecurity connections as students, professors and industry professionals work together to form alliances for a stronger and better prepared cybersecurity workforce,” said event organizer Dwight T. Elliott, J.D., PBSC professor of information management and Ethical Hackers Club faculty advisor.

Anthony Asci, a specialist with the School District’s Department of Choice & Career Options, and John Hadley, PBSC interim associate dean, will speak about the recently formed PBSC/School District partnership to enhance cybersecurity instruction and career preparation. The Palm Beach Collaborative Cyber Pathway Project is funded by a $1 million-plus grant from the Florida Department of Education.

The project is inspiring students like Stanley Wisnioski to pursue cybersecurity careers. Wisnioski is a dual-enrolled student who attends William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens and is taking college-credit courses at Palm Beach State, pursuing the cybersecurity degree pathway. He is also an active member of the PBSC Ethical Hackers Club and will demonstrate cyber defense and ethical hacking techniques at the symposium.

In addition, a Cybersecurity Brain Bowl will pit two PBSC student teams — the Code Breakers and Data Warriors — against each other in a Jeopardy-like competition to test their cyber knowledge.

Attendees will learn about PBSC’s cybersecurity programs and the college’s recently earned designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense. The CAE Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) designation is awarded to regionally accredited academic institutions that offer quality cybersecurity-related degrees and/or certificates and meet rigorous requirements to prepare students for the nation’s cybersecurity workforce.

Palm Beach State College cybersecurity pathway includes associate and bachelor’s degrees as well as certificates. Students typically start with a two-year Associate in Science or Associate in Arts degree that builds the technical foundation necessary to enter PBSC’s two-year Bachelor of Applied Science degree program in Information Management with a concentration in Security and Network Assurance. People who have a degree, or need a faster route to employment, may choose from a variety of short-term College Credit Certificates. For more information, visit PBSC’s Center for Cyber Defense.
