South Florida Fair Kids’ Mile returns to fairgrounds

Posted

WEST PALM BEACH — The South Florida Fair Kids’ Mile, sponsored by Baptist Health, returns to the annual fair on Saturday, Jan. 15, as thousands of children complete the last mile of a marathon on the grounds of the South Florida Fair, 9067 Southern Blvd. in West Palm Beach. The Kids’ K race for under school age children begins at 8:20 a.m., and the Kids Mile race begins at 8:30 a.m.

The event is the culmination of a 12-week training program that enables children to run a full 26.2-mile marathon by running portions of it each week. Kids enjoy the sense of accomplishment and benefits of exercise without the risk of injury by running a full marathon in one day.

The tradition of having the kids run the final mile on the first Saturday of the fair resumes after a hiatus last year. The South Florida Fair Kids Mile is endorsed by the School District of Palm Beach County, and all elementary schools are encouraged to participate. In addition to running portions during the 12 weeks of training, students are required to read 15 minutes each day. Lessons include topics on nutrition and fitness. Everyone is asked to bring non-perishable food the morning of the race to benefit the Palm Beach County Food Bank.

Those students who participate in the Jan. 15 race will receive one free admission to the fair to use on the day of the race or any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of the fair. They also will receive a finisher’s medal, cape, bib number, and refreshments after the race.

About the South Florida Fair: The South Florida Fair is produced by the South Florida Fair & Palm Beach County Expositions, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Located at 9067 Southern Boulevard in West Palm Beach, the 2022 South Florida Fair will kick off with a Ride-A-Thon on January 13 and the full fair will be held Jan. 14-30.
