CLEWISTON- Former Clewiston High School Tiger Andrew Powell has been selected to become the head coach of the Clewiston football program.
Powell played football in Clewiston under head coach Al Morrell and Pete Walker on both the offensive and defensive lines. During his three seasons with the program the Tigers had a 28-13 record. Powell was ranked one of the top linemen in the state, earning all-league and all-district awards. During his junior season the team finished as state runners-up.
“I’m glad to be on board and I’m glad to be home as a fighting Tiger,” Powell said during a call with CHS principal Phillip Summers, vice principal Reko Parantha, and athletic director Pete Walker.
“You’ll do a great job,” replied Walker. “You’ve always been a class act.”
After graduating from Clewiston Powell attended college at Mississippi State, where he played on the defensive line. He closed out his collegiate career starting 11 of the 12 games he played, netting 34 tackles, two tackles for loss and a half-sack as a senior in 2006. He was a free agent signing of the Baltimore Ravens in 2007, and spent time with the Green Bay Blizzard arena football team.
Powell is replacing one of his former coaches, Pete Walker, who is stepping down. Walker secured the record for the second winningest coach in Clewiston High School history last season.
