CLEWISTON — A Clewiston man accused of killing his wife was taken into custody by U.S. Customs on Dec. 16, 2021, on a Hendry County Sheriff’s Office arrest warrant as he returned to the United States from Cuba. Rafael Montejo-Luna, 57, was turned over to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 10, 2022.

The warrant for the arrest of Montejo-Luna was first issued on Nov. 3, 2021, after Montejo-Luna failed to meet with law enforcement, after agreeing to do so. Deputies wanted to speak with Montejo Luna regarding the death of his estranged wife, 57 year old Aleyda Garcia of Montura Ranch Estates, Clewiston.

On April 24, 2021, Hendry County deputies responded to the home of Aleyda Garcia in Montura, after receiving a call from her son who had reported he was unable to reach his mother and requested a deputy go by the home to check on her. Deputies were unable to make contact with Aleyda, so they made entry into the residence. It was then they found Aleyda Garcia deceased.

It was learned by detectives through investigation that the Lunas were in the process of a divorce. Montejo-Luna had moved from the residence to the Miami area. Hendry County Deputies had responded to the Luna home on several occasions regarding arguments between the two. After the death of Montejo-Luna’s estranged wife, detectives made several attempts to meet with Rafael, which met with negative results.

Currently Montejo-Luna is being held in the Hendry County Jail on $500,000 bond.
