CLEWISTON --  The Clewiston Police Explorer program  is esigned to give youth the opportunity to learn about a law enforcement career and provide hands-on experience in criminal justice and law enforcement. Members of the Clewiston Police Explorers participate in training sessions overseen by law enforcement advisors. Topics include, arrest and control, criminal law and criminal procedure. 

Recently, the program held an interview process to determine which of the current participants would be named as the program’s sergeant.

“On Thursday, our five of our Explorers interviewed for the position of Explorer Sergeant. All of the participants previously attended a meeting where they were taught interview skills. The skills that were learned were on full display on Thursday. The interview was the final portion of the sergeant’s evaluation,” reported the Clewiston Police Explorers.

Five explorers applied for the rank of Explorer Sergeant. The process included a personal fitness exam, an interview,  and evaluation of attendance at special events, scenario days, and regular meetings.

During the personal fitness exam, Explorer Ward (explorers are only mentioned by last name by the program, for privacy purposes), completed the highest amount of push-ups and sit-ups. In addition, he completed his mile run in under 7 minutes and 30 seconds; nearly a minute faster than the next Explorer. The advisors, along with the entire department, were impressed with his enthusiasm and motivation.

“As a result of the testing that has been held over the past few months, Explorer Ward was promoted to Sergeant,” the Clewiston Police Explorer program lannounced. “Explorer Ward achieved a perfect score during the PT assessment, tied second for attendance, and scored very high during the interview. His motivation has been an inspiration to many other Explorers, and we look forward to working with him.”

Anyone between the ages of 10 and 20 years old, and between sixth and twelfth grade, that are interested in law enforcement are welcome. Explorers get to experience what it is like for law enforcement officers to respond during domestic violence scenarios, learn about building clearance, and even active threat response. Fifth graders who are ten years old and will graduating next month are encouraged to learn about the program as well.
