Clewiston soccer hosts Senior Night

Posted

CLEWISTON — The Clewiston Tiger varsity soccer team hosted its Senior Night on Jan. 20 before their game against the Glades Day Gators.

Among the seniors recognized before the game was captain Josue Gonzalez, the all-time leading scorer in the history of Clewiston soccer. Josue went on to lead the Tigers to a 6-1 victory over the Gators, scoring four goals.

The Gators managed to keep things close throughout the first half of the game. Gators goalie Julian Ramos did well in fending off the multiple shots on goal by the Tigers. Julian had 16 saves against the high powered Clewiston offense. Thanks in part to that defensive effort as well as an early goal from Gators’ senior Kolton DesRochers, Glades Day headed into halftime tied with Clewiston 1-1.

But during the second half, the onslaught of Tiger shots on goal became too much for the Gators to fend off, and the rout was on.

In addition to Josue’s four goal, Clewiston senior Jose Fajardo and junior Miguel Figueroa each had one goal. Tiger goalie Isaias Raya had four saves defending the net on the night.

Following that win the Tigers hosted another Lake Okeechobee school, the Glades Central Raiders. On Jan. 22 the Raiders battled the Tigers on Cane Field and managed to end the game in a 4-4 tie.

Clewiston junior Mario Tamayo had four saves as goalie that night to keep the Raiders from leaving Cane Field with a win. Josue Gonzalez had two goals against Glades Central, while his fellow senior Diego Paniagua and junior Emilio Rico had one.

The Tigers are now 8-3-3 for their 2020-2021 season.
