Cold nights threaten safety of outdoor pets

Posted

Clewiston — Cold fronts have made for some really cold nights lately, and Clewiston Animal Control (CAC) recently issued a public service announcement regarding taking precautions to keep pets safe during the cooler winter temperatures we have been experiencing.

On the evening of Monday, Feb. 1, CAC issued a statement, that said “Temperatures tonight will reach 45 degrees with winds at 20 mph! That much wind will make it feel like 30 degrees. We are advising all owners with outdoor pets to provide warm adequate shelter to escape the chill. Avoiding the wind will help tremendously.” The statement went on, “You can also provide blankets, heat lamps (hung safely to prevent fire), straw (NOT HAY since it can lock in moisture and cause the pets to become colder or ill from being damp) but the BEST prevention tonight is to bring them inside if possible.”

Local veterinarians and animal advocates agree with CAC, and are working together to urge residents to remember their pets may need extra care during these cold nights.

“Spread the word to any friends, family or neighbors. If you are caught not providing adequate shelter for your pets, tonight or year round) you can face a fine of cruelty starting at $500 per pet so please be responsible,” CAC explained in their announcement.
