CPD asks for help identifying prowler

Posted

CLEWISTON-The Clewiston Police Department reported an  investigation of a series of incidents where a suspected prowler was seen approaching homes during the overnight hours of May 12 - 13, 2021.

The incidents were reported to have occurred in the area of East Avenida del Rio, North San Diego Street, North San Gabriel Street, and East Sugarland Highway.

“The first 911 caller was awakened by their doorbell camera at shortly after 12:45 a.m. The doorbell camera revealed an unknown individual approaching the front door, but appearing startled by the doorbell camera activation and walking away,” explained CPD. “The next incident occurred moments later, where an individual matching the description from the first incident approaches the front of a different home, walks up to the front of a car parked in the driveway, and walks away.“

CPD Officers responded, established a large perimeter, and began to close in on the suspect. Based on the timing of the third video, the suspect came from running from the rear of a home, featured in the second video, as officers got close to him. The suspect has not been identified.

“Prowling incidents are becoming less common as cameras are becoming more common, making it easier to identify suspects involved. Nonetheless, adult suspects are known to use proxies, often juveniles, to determine if a home has a camera system before they commit a property crime. This may have been what was occurring here,” CPD stated.

The search within the perimeter, combined with the fact that no one was seen leaving the area during the search, has led investigators to believe that this suspect likely lives in this area.

CPD asks the community, “If you know who the suspect in these videos might be, or if you have additional camera footage that captured the movement of this suspect hiding and/or walking around your property, please contact the Clewiston Police Department at 863-983-1474 ext. 206 to speak to a detective. You can also email tips and/or footage of this or any crime to police@clewiston-fl.gov. Lets identify him and address this issue before additional incidents occur.”
