HENDRY COUNTY — On Tuesday, March 28, Hendry County was recognized for being home to one million Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) solar panels. Representatives with FPL presented a commemorative plaque to the Board of County Commissioners to showcase this milestone for the county. Hendry County joins five other Florida counties as home to more than 1 million FPL solar panels: Okeechobee, Indian River, St. Lucie, Manatee and DeSoto counties.

Hendry County is home to four FPL solar energy centers: FPL Hammock Solar Energy center that came online in 2018, FPL Blue Heron (2020), FPL Ghost Orchid (2022) and FPL Sawgrass (2022). Combined, these four solar energy centers are capable of powering 60,000 customer homes with zero-fuel, zero-emissions energy that comes from a free energy source – Florida’s sunshine.

“Hendry County has truly been a crucial partner to FPL in our pursuit of bringing low-cost, reliable energy to our customers while moving Florida further toward energy independence,” said Charlotte Miller, external affairs manager for FPL in southwest Florida. “We thank the county for its partnership in building Florida’s energy future for our children and our children’s children.”

FPL currently operates more than 60 solar energy centers throughout Florida and three more are expected to come online in the coming months. In total, FPL’s portfolio of solar energy centers is capable of powering more than 900,000 customer homes with solar energy, which reduces carbon emissions equal to removing more than 850,000 gasoline-dependent vehicles off the road each year.
