MOORE HAVEN — Allyson Lara and Salome Ortiz, two local high school juniors, were selected to represent Glades Electric Cooperative this summer on an all-expenses paid educational trip to Washington, D.C. as part of a national electric cooperative program. Lara and Ortiz will meet congressional leaders, tour the capital and visit historic monuments during the June 13-18 trip.

Lara, a junior from Moore Haven Middle-High School, and Ortiz, a junior from Clewiston High School will join their peers from across the country in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s annual Washington Youth Tour. For over 50 years, NRECA has hosted this week on Capitol Hill to help students explore the political process.

Salome Ortiz from Clewiston High School was one of two students chosen to represent Glades Electric Cooperative in Washington, DC this summer.

Glades Electric selected Lara and Ortiz as Youth Tour representatives through an application process, which was based on their academic achievement, leadership skills, and letters of recommendation. Ortiz is a Clewiston High School student who plans to study kinesiology in college. As part of her commitment to learning more about the body, Ortiz has already earned her certified nurse’s assistant certification. To develop her leadership skills, she completed the Hendry/Glades Youth Leadership Program and currently serves as a class officer. In addition, she started the International Key Club at her high school. She is also a student athlete who participates in cheerleading, soccer, cross country, and ballet.

Lara is a dual enrollment student who attends Moore Haven Middle-High School and Florida SouthWestern College. She plans to study law. To prepare for her future career, she participates in Incubate Debate, a program that teaches debate and builds knowledge and confidence. In addition, she is also honing her leadership skills by being a member of Future Business Leaders of America and the student government council. “This is such an amazing opportunity I get to be part of!” Lara said. “I am blessed to say the least.”

Each year, Glades Electric encourages high school juniors served by GEC to apply for the Washington Youth Tour program. GEC selects two students to be part of the Florida Youth Tour delegation to represent the co-op for the annual tour of the nation’s capital.
