Hendry BOCC discuss redistricting map

Posted

LABELLE -- Hendry County Board of County Commissioners discussed with County Attorney Mark Lapp redistricting plans during its Sept. 28, 2021 regular meeting.

Redistricting takes place after every U.S. Census, or every 10 years. It is a legally required process redrawing districts for the U.S. House and state legislatures with the intention of creating districts that are equal or as close to equal in population as possible.

County Attorney Mark Lapp said there can only be a 10% deviation between the largest and smallest district.

Lapp said a preliminary map had been drawn and would be presented to the Hendry County School District for its input and then joint public hearings in November and December for public input before finalizing.

“If the board wants to move a boundary, you can bring it up at the two meetings in October saying the board wants to make an adjustment,” he said. “There would be a vote and I’d send on to the school board with the change.”

Commissioner Karson Turner asked what Lapp thought the top adjustments might be, where the biggest shifts have been.

Lapp said the main changes from the current map to the new one is Montura, which now is slated to be split in half between Districts 4 and 5.

“Before it was probably 80 to 90% in District 4,” he said.

Port LaBelle units 1 and 2, which is Country Oaks Elementary School area and south of that moved from District 2 to District 4 under the new proposal. Areas in District 3 switched to District 2 around the north side of State Road 80 around the Walmart area.

Vice Chair Emma Byrd of District 1 said she preferred her lines extend more to Hooker’s Point, as proposed in the map.

Commissioners voted 5-0 in favor of Lapp presenting the proposed map to the school board.

Copies of the proposed redistricting maps can be found on the Hendry County website
