Health departments in Hendry and Glades Counties announce new interim health officer

The Florida Department of Health is pleased to announce Jennifer Hood, APRN Community Health Nursing Director as the new Interim Health Officer for Hendry and Glades Counties.

Ms. Hood has worked for the Health Departments in Hendry and Glades as the Nursing Director and has over twenty years of service in rural public health as an advanced practice registered nurse, assistant director of nursing, and nursing director.

Some of her responsibilities over the last 20 years have included directly leading and supervising multi-disciplinary teams serving in a wide variety of health programs including clinical services in three locations (two counties), communicable disease surveillance and investigation including tuberculosis, and school health. She has overseen the supervision of Healthy Start, Healthy Families, HIV program, Drug Free Hendry County, and Chronic Disease and Tobacco Cessation Programs.

She continues to be involved in the public health accreditation process including the community health assessment, community health improvement process, quality improvement, workforce development, and strategic planning.

Some of her other accomplishments include: Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification, served as Glades ESF 8 Health & Medical delegate during Hurricane Irma, served as Southwest Nursing Director Consortium chair 2018 & 2019, and was selected for the USF Public Health Leadership Institution with Capstone Project.

She received her Master of Science in Nursing in 1999 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. (Related coursework: Emphasis on health promotion across the lifespan; clinical experiences in rural communities and public health departments; leadership skills and business plan development.)

She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Florida in Gainesville. (Related coursework: Educational psychology, statistics, and competency-based education in multiple settings.)

Most recently Jennifer has completed the Florida Department of Health Executive Leadership program in collaboration with USF in addition to many specialized trainings as part of her medical role.

In March 2021, she was appointed as the Assistant County Health Department Administrator.

 Hood brings a wealth of clinical and programmatic knowledge to her new role.
