School board race continues to possible recount, after runoff numbers remain close

CLEWISTON -- Hendry County Supervisor of Elections is still tabulating the results of Tuesday’s general election as of Friday, Nov. 11, although some races have been called.

All ballots, except mail-in ballots, have been counted and recorded, and the below information reflects the current status as of Nov. 8 at 9:05 p.m.

The most publicized election race was that between Hendry County School Board Member Stephanie Busin and her opponent Joe Whitehead who faced a runoff Nov. 8 for the board’s Dist. 4 seat.

In the Aug. 23 primary election, Busin received 48.9% of the vote and Whitehead received 46.39%, resulting in them both being placed on the Nov. 8 ballot.

This time, the race results were even closer with Busin edging up to 50.30% of the vote and Whitehead 49.7%.

A review by the canvassing board that will check voting challenges and signature verifications that was to take place Nov. 10 was pushed to Saturday, Nov. 12 by Gov. Ron DeSantis due to interruptions caused by Tropical Storm Nicole.

At that time, the Hendry County canvassing board will determine if a recount of the school board votes is necessary, planned to take place Tuesday, Nov. 15.

In the City of Clewiston, incumbent commissioners Hillary Hyslope and Greg Thompson retained their seats. Barbara Edmonds was elected to the commission, while Rolando “Rolly” Gonzalez, Michael Swangler and Ian Stone were defeated.

The half-cent sales tax referendum for the Hendry County School District passed 52.89% with 47.11% opposed. The school district will use the funding for school buildings and improvements.
