LaBelle man charged with leaving accident scene after hitting with pedestrian who was lying down on the shoulder of the road

CLEWISTON — A 56-year-old Clewiston man was critically injured on Sunday evening in an accident on State Road 80, according to the Florida Highway Patrol report.

At approximately 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, a pickup truck, driven by a 30-year-old LaBelle man, was traveling east on State Road 80, west of the Hendry Isles Boulevard turn lane.

A pedestrian, a 56-year-old Clewiston man, was lying down on the shoulder of State Road 80, approximately 100 feet west of Hendry Isles Boulevard.

The pickup moved to the State Road 80 turn lane for the Shell Gas Station at 13979 E. State Road 80, in Clewiston, in an attempt to yield to an emergency vehicle that was responding to an unrelated call.

The pickup traveled over the painted fog line and collided with the pedestrian. The vehicle came to a controlled stop in the business parking lot and the driver o walked away from the scene. The driver was arrested and charged with DUI – serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious injury and driving while license suspended.

The traffic accident was investigate by he Florida Highway Patrol Trooper G. Zimmerly.

The pickup truck driver was booked into the Hendry County Jail.
