CLEWISTON -- The Hendry County School District recognized Maria Self for her 27 years of service during the June 7 school board meeting.

Self  is retiring from Central Elementary School, where she has worked since 1995 as front desk clerk.

Superintendent Michael Swindle presented Self with a plaque from the entire school district, thanking her for her service.

He read highlights from a letter composed by her co-workers which lauded Self for her helpfulness, her extensive ability running the office, her smiles and encouraging students to always do the best they can and to do the right thing.  She is also considered a "jack of all trades" for doing just about everything needed in the office.

Self listed 33 responsibilities she carried out in her office, something Swindle joked he did not think he had that many in his job.

"We will miss her terribly," the staff letter said. "And wish her nothing but the best and enjoying her time with here family. We love you, Ms. Self."

Swindle noted that most credit teachers for inspiring students, and that the recognition given to Self only shows that students benefit from all staff members, including the front desk clerk.
