Posted

CLEWISTON -- The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office (HSCO) reports one person was killed and three others injured in a shooting during the evening of Saturday, May 1, at the annual Brown Sugar Festival in Clewiston.

Lehigh Acres resident Evereonna Sankey, 20,  was killed.

HCSO confirmed the shooting happened around 9 p.m.

Festival goers flocked to social media after the shooting, posting videos and photos of the victims being given CPR by deputies, while waiting for EMS to arrive. Many expressed their shock and sadness about the shooting.

Information regarding any suspects or the conditions of the victims has not been shared by HCSO.

The Brown Sugar Festival, an annual festival held in the Harlem Community, celebrating African and West Indian heritage. Not only does this festival work to spread local awareness and appreciation of Black heritage, the event also raises funds to assist in sending Black students to college.

The 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, after the 2021 Clewiston Sugar Festival was cancelled (due to COVID-19 concerns), there was some question if the Brown Sugar Festival might also again be cancelled.
