The Weekly Clothesline - God never said to remain 6 feet apart!

Please stand 6 feet apart. Those signs are everywhere. The pandemic has changed us. For a time, we were told to wear masks. But even with the masks, we were still charged to stand apart from each other. And we didn’t like it.

There’s a saying: you don’t know what you’ve got, until you lose it. A simple thing like being ordered to stay away from each other practically brought us to our knees, reminding us how important physical contact is, especially with loved ones.

I was reminded of the sick woman in a crowd of people who simply touched Jesus’ garment and was cured. But that wouldn’t have happened if there had been a mandate to remain six feet apart! There would have been no crowd around Jesus, and there would have been no opportunity for the woman to act on her faith.

During this difficult time, I would venture to say that most of us found a new and important connection to our God, perhaps one we didn’t know we needed! Now we’re almost back to normal, feeling extremely grateful for the protection and love we received from God along the way.

The next time you’re waiting in line somewhere, look at one of those signs on the floor, and thank God that the mandate is over, that our world is getting back to normal. And, most importantly, remember that your God never paid attention to staying 6 feet apart from you!

About the Weekly Clothesline:

When Covid prevented us from worshiping together on Sundays, I began thinking about ways to keep us together. Then, it occurred to me that the usual mid-week services in all denominations served to “prop us up” from Sunday to Sunday. The idea of “propping up” made me think of an old-fashioned clothesline and the stick we used to prop up the middle of the clothesline after we had hung all the clothes… designed to keep the clothes from landing on the ground. So it is with The Weekly Clothesline: to keep us propped up, from Sunday to Sunday, fresh and clean for the work God has for us to do.
