GLADES COUNTY – A 9-year-old Okeechobee girl was killed in a crash on State Road 78, south of Tomato Grade Road at 2:22 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to the FHP report, a sport utility vehicle (SUV), towing a trailer, driven by a 30-year-old Okeechobee man, was  traveling south on State Road 78, south of Tomato Grade Road.

A sedan driven by a 46-year-old Okeechobee woman was traveling north on State Road 78.

The SUV driver apparently lost control of the vehicle. The SUV traveled into the northbound lane and entered the path of the sedan. The sedan driver veered right to avoid the oncoming SUV, but the SUV collided with the sedan.

The child, who was a passenger in the sedan, was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced deceased. According to the FHP report, she was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

A 77-year-old woman, who was also a passenger in the sedan, was seriously injured. She was also taken to the hospital.

Both drivers had minor injuries, according to the FHP report.

The crash is still under investigation.
