Big Lake Athlete of the Week: Sydney Matthews

Posted

Okeechobee High School sophomore Sydney Matthews is this week’s Big Lake Athlete of the Week for her performance during the Lady Brahman varsity volleyball game against Lake Placid on Oct. 7.

Matthews played a key role in the 3-0 Okeechobee win over Lake Placid, leading the team with 15 kills. The Lady Brahmans won the first set 25-16, second set 25-20, and third set 25-18.

Matthews’ mix of crushing spikes and light touches at the net kept Lake Placid on their heels for the entire match. Perfectly timed assists from seniors Morgan Tucker and Kiersten Kennedy gave Mathews ample opportunity to pick apart the Lake Placid defense.

Matthews is part of a young core of sophomores on the varsity squad. With seniors like Joy Whipple, Anja Koivunen, and Morgan Tucker graduating after this season, Matthews could become part of the next set of team leaders for the Lady Brahmans.

As Okeechobee heads into the district playoffs on Oct. 20, the Lady Brahmans could use another clutch performance from their young players.

Okeechobee finished the regular season ranked third in their district and will travel to face the Suncoast Lady Chargers in the district semifinals. Suncoast is one of a string of teams along the coast that consistently field competitive teams in volleyball. Coastal teams like Suncoast have always been a thorn in the Lady Brahmans’ side. Especially in the playoffs.
