Brahmans top Terriers in basketball

MOORE HAVEN – The Okeechobee High School Brahman varsity basketball team is 7-2 following their 98-59 win over the Moore Haven Terriers on Jan. 14.

The victory means Okeechobee has completed a season sweep of Moore Haven after their 60-45 win back on Dec. 1.

Coincidentally both games between the two teams started in similar fashion– with the Terriers taking an early lead.

Moore Haven led the Brahmans 22-18 after the first quarter. But in the second half Okeechobee took complete control of the flow of the game. Kehjayah Rogers led in scoring for the Brahmans with 29 points, followed by Jahsheem Dawson with 13, Rowan Hanley with 10, and Jayquavious Thomas with nine.

The win comes on the back of Okeechobee’s 66-47 victory over Fort Pierce Westwood on Jan. 12. Overall the Brahmans have now stacked four back-to-back wins since their Dec. 18 loss to South Fork.

The Brahmans currently are ranked first in their 5A District 13, with their next district matchup coming on Jan. 29 when they host the Jensen Beach Falcons.

For years Jensen Beach was the lone school standing in the way of the Brahmans in their hopes of obtaining a district title. Two years ago Okeechobee finally dispatched the Falcons in the district playoffs to claim their first title in decades, and Jensen Beach hasn’t been able recover.

The Falcons are 6-5 this season and have lost their last four matchups with Okeechobee.

After the Falcons await what may be one of the toughest opponents the Brahmans face this year, the undefeated Martin County Tigers. The Tigers are 16-0 and currently lead their 6A District 13. The Feb. 1 away game for Okeechobee should be an entertaining, competitive game between two district leaders.

But first the Brahmans will be at home hosting the 5-9 Treasure Coast Titans. Okeechobee split their two games against Treasure Coast last year, losing the first 55-50 and dominating the second with 50-20 victory.

The Brahmans host the Titans at 7 p.m. at OHS on Jan. 27.
