MOORE HAVEN — The Glades County School District issued an announcement that all students will return to virtual learning, effective Jan. 20. All students will attend classes online until Feb. 1.

This change is in response to the substantial rise in COVID-19 cases that has resulted in larger numbers of students and staff being sent home.

“First, let me thank you for your support and understanding as we, as a nation and community, respond to the unexpected invasion of COVID-19. While we are in the business of educating, our first priority is the safety of our students and our employees,” wrote Dr. Alice E. Barfield, Superintendent of Schools for Glades County, in a letter to parents. “The Glades County School District was notified on Monday morning, Jan. 18, that cases have risen substantially over the past five days causing students and staff members to be sent home as either a positive case or direct contact. As you can imagine, this is something we are taking very seriously and dealing with accordingly. We are asking you to continue to adhere to social distancing and other health precautions.”

“We are working diligently with the Glades County Health Department to ensure quick and efficient notification of all cases,” added Barfield. “Although our desire is to remain in school as normal (traditional) with enhanced safety and cleaning procedures, the numbers don’t support that learning style.”

Barfield explained the district continues to be vigilant about student and staff safety and health, and will adapt accordingly.

A schedule and plan for meal distribution will soon be sent out to parents.
