Florida to lower vaccination age to 60 on Monday

Posted

COVID-19 vaccination continues to expand in Florida with opportunities for more people to be vaccinated against the deadly virus.

The State of Florida will lower the age for COVID-19 vaccinations to 60, starting Monday, March 15, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced March 8 at a press conference in Tallahasee.

He said demand for vaccinations for those over 65 is starting to soften. He said 2.6 million persons over the age of 65 have been vaccinated. Over 56% of the state’s senior population have received at least one dose, he said.

Until March 15, vaccinations are available to: Those 65 years of age and older; health care personnel with direct patient contact; K-12 school employees 50 years of age and older; sworn law enforcement officers 50 years of age and older; and firefighters 50 years of age and older.

Publix announced Monday that beginning March 10, it will offer appointments for Johnson & Johnson vaccines at its 67 stores in the county and more than 700 locations throughout the state, with priority given to pre-K-12 school employees and day-care workers.

High risk individuals
Individuals who are at high risk from COVID-19 due to health issues can qualify for vaccination with a signed statement from the doctor, regardless of age. However, these individuals can only obtain vaccinations from their doctor, a hospital or a pharmacy. For more information, contact your primary care physician.

Clewiston

The Hendry County Health Department in Clewiston will take walk-in and appointments for first dose COVID-19 vaccinations on Saturday, March 13 starting at 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at 1100 S. Olympia Street in Clewiston. The Moderna vaccine will be used.

Okeechobee County
Okeechobee County continues to use the state vaccination waitlist for COVID-19 appointments. Appointments required. Go to myvaccine.fl.gov or call 866-201-1060 to make an appointment in Okeechobee County. Please only request an appointment once. Multiple attempts will void the original appointment request and put your name lower on the waitlist.

Glades County
Glades County is using the state website to schedule vaccine appointments. Individuals can pre-register to “get in line” and will be notified with available appointment time. Visit myvaccine.fl.gov or call 866-201-6745. On occasion during clinics when there is vaccine available, Glades County also offer vaccinations to walk-ins. Watch the SouthCentralFloridaLife.com website for notifications when walk-in vaccinations are available.

Palm Beach County
Palm Beach County residents can sign up for a vaccination appointment at http://vaccine.hcdpbc.org/ or call 561-804-4115. The Health Care District has completed scheduling nearly all individuals who were on the Department of Health-Palm Beach County’s (DOH) waiting list, and who also confirmed that they still wanted appointments. Individuals who believe they were on the DOH waitlist, but were not contacted for an appointment can submit a new appointment request and check “Yes” in the box indicating they were on the waitlist. The Health Care District will verify and prioritize accordingly.

A vaccination pod continues to operate in Pahokee at the Anquan Boldin Stadium. Community members have been calling senior citizens and going door-to-door to help the residents of rural Palm Beach County get vaccinations. For more information, call Lisa Wilson in the office of Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay at 877-930-2206. Guardians of the Glades is also active in getting senior citizens to the vaccination clinics, when vaccine is available.
