MOORE HAVEN -- The Glades County Board of County Commissioners are a step closer to hiring a new County Manager.
During its regular July 26, 2021 meeting, commissioners voted 5-0 to move forward with one of several candidates that have applied for the position.
The base salary range for the job is between $90,000 to $125,000 plus benefits and Commissioners had been interviewing several candidates since July 15.
Now that one candidate has been selected, it is time to negotiate terms and hopefully come to an agreement for work.
Commissioner Donna Storter-Long urged commissioners to require whoever fills the position to commit to not working other jobs while fulfilling duties of the manager position.
“It is better for us that he is not doing a second job,” Storter-Long said.
The candidate in question has an existing business that some other commissioners were not comfortable asking that be given up in order to take the manager job.
Storter-Long pointed to a recent county manager in another Florida county that kept an existing job while working as a county employee that did not work out well for the county.
“If I had not heard from two reputable people reports that I trust,” she would not have mentioned it to her fellows, she said. But the reports she heard was that the outside job was slowing down the work for the county.
Commissioners decided to discuss other work options with the candidate during upcoming negotiations.
Glades County Human Resources said today negotiations are still underway and no formal decision has been made.
