Glades Electric sponsors students for Washington, D.C. tour

MOORE HAVEN — Two local students will represent Glades Electric Cooperative this summer on an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. as part of a national electric co-op program.

The high school juniors, Lillian Everett of Moore Haven Middle-High School and Alexis Imhoff of Clewiston High School, will participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s annual Washington Youth Tour with students from across the nation. NRECA has hosted the tour for over fifty years.

From June 14-19, the students will meet with members of Congress, explore monuments and museums, and learn about the history of electric cooperatives. The program is returning to an in-person format this year for the first time since 2019, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Everett and Imhoff were selected, through an application process, based on their outstanding academic achievements and community involvement.

Everett is President of her class and Student Council Vice President. She is also President of the Glades County Rooters 4-H Club, and she is active in the First Baptist Church of Moore Haven Youth Alive Group.

Imhoff is also President of her class and a member of the National Honor Society. She participates in her school’s volleyball and softball programs, and she volunteers her time for community clean-up efforts.

Everett and Imhoff are both enrolled in their schools’ Collegiate Academy programs through Florida SouthWestern State College.

Each year, high school juniors served by Glades Electric are invited to apply for the program, and two students are selected to represent the co-op.
