Letter to the Editor: Life begins at conception

Posted

When I hear women say, with regards to abortion, that they have a right to do what they want with their own bodies, I become very angry and very troubled.

Our forefathers wrote the “Declaration of Independence” specifically stating that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” They unequivocally agreed that this pertains to all human life. They did not say that a woman can decide she doesn’t want this child, or for other reasons, can take the life of this child, because that child has a God given right to life. It is not a woman’s right but a God given one that every child has the authority to be born.

Women who insist that their child is their body, and have a right to do whatever they want to their unborn baby are essentially morally wrong. The baby they carry is not just their body. It is a combination of a man’s seed and a woman’s egg, making it a totally new creature born with the same rights as the two contributors. The mother is the vessel that holds the child. When a baby is born it has half the DNA of the father’s and half of the mother’s. This makes it a brand new human being.

The church and Christianity have taught that all life begins at conception and ends at natural death. We don’t have the right to change religious laws and truths just because we feel like it. There is no right to kill except of course in self-protection. Only God has the right to take a life. We do not. The fifth commandment given by God says “Thou Shalt not Kill!” When we do, we have morally sinned and turned away from God. We cannot pick and choose which of God’s commandments we want to practice and which ones we don’t.

Pregnant women today have much better choices to make about their unborn babies. There are so many right to life programs out there. Women can give their babies up for adoption. There are so many parents who want their own children and cannot have them. There is counseling and even private safe places where a mother can leave her child and know that it will be cared for. We must choose life for the unborn. It is the only morally right thing to do!
