Meet the Firefighter/EMT: Lt. Biggs’ multiple talents save tax money, not just lives

Posted

MOORE HAVEN — Glades County Firefighter Lt. John Biggs became chief of the Moore Haven volunteer squad the week before Christmas 1996, when then-Chief Frank Birdwell, his father-in-law, passed away at 53.

Lt. Biggs was raised in Clewiston and moved to Moore Haven in 1989.

Biggs joined the Moore Haven Volunteer Fire Department when he first moved to the county with his late wife, Mary Lois Birdwell Biggs. She was also a firefighter at the time. John and Mary Lois served their county together with pride for years.

Mrs. Biggs’ father and husband both had and have been outstanding active members throughout their entire service, and Lt. Biggs has followed in Chief Frank’s footsteps ever since in serving the Lake O region communities and Glades County.

Now, Biggs has worked for the Glades County Public Safety Department for well over 30 years. He remains active in training with the volunteer and full-time firefighters via responding to calls and as an instructor.

“This helps the county save money, and when they see John’s passion it lights a fire in them as well,” said Angie S. Colegrove, GCPS director.

Biggs also owns his own lawn-mowing business, Sweet Cuts Lawn Care, and operates the mosquito-spraying truck for the City of Moore Haven, which he has done for years.

In another role, he works his friend and fellow firefighter, boat Captain Bill Matchekosky, with his Lake Tow/Recovery business based in Lakeport. Biggs is a certified diver for search and rescue.

John’s free time is spent with his wife, Jennifer Biggs, on the river or lake and fishing.
