BUCKHEAD RIDGE -- The Jan. 25 meeting of the Buckhead Ridge Community Association was full of news and interesting information. The 7 p.m. meeting, which follows a covered dish dinner each month, was attended by several new people to the community. Visiting were Jennifer and Greg Thacker, Larry Wise and Diane Lizotte.

The Mosquito Control Board report, which led the meeting, said that many more canals in the area have been cleaned and grants are being sought to get a harvester to keep them clean. They are using a type of pellet which “eats” the muck in the canals. They also reported a $500 and a $1,000 donation which helped them, during the Wreaths Across America project, to be able to place wreaths on every Glades County Veteran’s grave site.

Glades County Commissioner Tim Stanley asked for volunteers to help clean, repair and rebuild the old BHR Firehouse. He said Lake Drive West will be repaved and sidewalks are due to begin construction in June.

He also reported that the proposed construction of a large reservoir on the land on the other side of State Road 78 has been dropped.

Supervisor of Elections Aletris Farnam, spoke about some added categories for tax exemption. Farnam was named as a Master Florida Certified Elections Professional. She began taking classes in February 2019 and completed the course in April 2021. She is one of only 32 out of 67 State Supervisors to hold this certification. This program is offered through the Florida Institute of Government.

Everyone living in BHR is welcome at the community meetings and pot luck dinners which are held the second Tuesday of every month behind the firehouse just across the Kissimmee River bridge on Hwy 78. You will quickly learn about all that is happening in and affecting your community.
