BUCKHEAD RIDGE — The February meeting of the Buckhead Ridge Community was held Feb. 28, with 86 residents attending the pot luck supper and meeting. There were many new residents in attendance.

Glades County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Johnson presented a report on calls for the month. For the second month in a row, the leading report was thefts from boats. Residents were urged to not leave any valuables or boat parts/equipment in your boat. Several depth finders have been taken.

Stu Taylor, head of the Mosquito Control Board, reported that BHR Representative Kaylee Tuck was able to secure $265 toward the purchase of a Harvester for use in BHR canals. Much work has been done already on cleaning the canals of debris, sunken vessels and trees. Stu congratulated Danny Duke for his faithfulness and good work in spraying the canals.

BHR Commissioner Tim Stanley, reported that Glades County Manager Marco Montes deOca resigned his position and has begun a new position with the Brighton Reservation. Stanley also said the commission is trying to get the levee paved. He reported that the Neighborhood Association made $4,023 at the BHR Catfish Festival. There were more vendors present than any time before. The catfish dinners totally sold out.

In other news, Glades County is advertising to fill the position of county administrator. Talks about beginning garbage service are progressing. A petition is being drawn up which will be circulated throughout Buckhead Ridge, for approval.

Engineer Steve Dobbs reported the water management district is working on water and sewer connections for Lakeview Estates, the new Community Development project just south of Buckhead Ridge. The Florida Department of Transportation has issued a permit for a ditch road from State Road 78 to the Rim Canal. The new community will have onsite ponds throughout and two charter schools – one for boys and one for girls. They are inviting Okeechobee businesses to open in the new community.

The meeting closed following the 50/50 drawing. The winner took home $75. The next meeting/pot luck dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m, Tuesday, March 28 in the Community Center Building located behind the Fire House.
