BELLE GLADE – A Belle Glade woman died after her car went into a canal at Torry Island in the early morning hours of Jan. 15, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) report.

On Sunday, Jan. 15, about 2:13 a.m. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and PBSO responded to Torry Island in reference to a report of a person screaming for help.

At the scene, Harrelle Dennard, 25, of Belle Glade, advised deputies that Elizabeth Robinson, 38, also of Belle Glade, drove her vehicle into the canal. Dennard said he was a passenger in the vehicle at the time. Dennard was able to get out of the vehicle but Robinson was unaccounted for.

PFCFR divers located the 2017 four-door Chevrolet in the canal, and found it unoccupied. PBSO Marine Unit responded and joined in the search.

Robinson was found in the main canal, about a quarter mile north of the crash scene at 11:45 a.m. She was declared dead at the scene. Robinson’s family was on the scene and notified of the death.

The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office has classified the death as accidental.
