Clewiston Museum hosts program on race and change

Posted

CLEWISTON — The Clewiston Museum is happy to announce the third "Florida Talks Fall Speakers Series" presentation will be held on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. The program will feature Dr. Kitty Oliver as she tells stories and sings through her program, "Race & Change Across Cultures & Generations: Florida Stories."

Dr. Kitty Oliver is a Florida-born author, oral historian, media producer and recording artist with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and a Ph.D. focusing on race and ethnic communication.

She is founder of the Race and Change Oral History Archive, housed in the Special Collections at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale. It is the largest of its kind and scope in the country and part of the American Folklife Center’s Civil Rights Project resources.

Dr. Oliver’s books and public television documentaries are used widely in public schools, college classrooms and community forums. Her work has been featured on CNN in the award-winning Ron Howard documentary film on the Beatles, “Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years,” where she shares personal experiences with the band and segregation in Florida.

Dr. Oliver is also a singer and recording artist, and her multimedia presentations blend stories, research and her original inspirational jazz music. She was also selected as a national Encore Public Voices Fellow for 2020-21.

During the presentation on the Dec. 2, Dr. Oliver will share how far we’ve come and how progress can be made that inspires our youth, drawing on the archive of over 125 oral histories of blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Caribbeans from a variety of heritages.

This program is a partnership between the Florida Humanities and the Clewiston Museum. Funding for this program was provided by Florida Humanities and sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. Accommodations for the speaker are being provided by the Clewiston Inn. Admission to the program is free!
