A young LaBelle man died Monday, January 25, in a three-vehicle crash on SR 29 south of CR 832. Nathaniel Gray White, 19, of LaBelle was killed when he was thrown from a 1999 Chevy S10.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Mr. White was southbound on SR 29 and a 2012 Nisson Altima driven by Erik Depaz Morales, 21, of Clewiston was northbound, passing other vehicles on the left, in the southbound lane.
Mr. White steered left to avoid a head on collision, but the Altima struck Mr. White’s truck on the right side. The Altima came to a rest facing east, blocking the northbound lane of SR 29 and the S10 came to a rest facing east on the northbound lane, south of the Altima.
A 1998 Peterbilt Convt driven by Gilberto Perez, 43, of LeHigh Acres was northbound and collided with the right side of the S10, which then rotated clockwise and exited the paved road, coming to a final rest partially submerged in a canal.
Mr. White was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the S10. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Peterbilt then struck the Altima which then rotated counterclockwise and came to a final rest on the west shoulder of SR 29 facing south. The Perez vehicle came to a final rest on the east shoulder of SR 29, facing north. Mr. Perez and his passenger, 10-year-old Fabrico Perez, also of LeHigh Acres, were both wearing seatbelts and were unhurt.
Mr. Morales was transported to LeHigh Regional Hospital with serious injuries. He had been wearing a seatbelt.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
