Hendry County School District and Hendry County BOCC meet to discuss redistricting

Posted

LABELLE -- The Hendry County School District and Hendry County Board of County Commissioners held a joint public meeting Dec. 7 to discuss redistricting plans that will impact both.

Both have been collaborating on the redistricting maps which must be finalized by the end of the month, according to law.

Lapp presented two revisions at the request of the school board, which wanted some slight changes in two of its districts, and which would be decided upon during the school board’s regular meeting following the public hearing.

Proposal 5 expanded the boundaries of District 4 in Montura south to Avenida del Sur, which is presently in District 5. Doing so would remove the fire station but could still retain it as a polling place if the Supervisor of Elections continued to use it for that purpose.

District 4, under this plan, would have boundaries reduced in Port LaBelle by moving the area west of Collingswood Parkway and couth of Cowboy Way to District 2.

The other plan Lapp  presented, Proposal 4, expanded boundaries to cover more of Montura which follows a canal at the southern side of the district with District 4 covering less of Port LaBelle. This proposal follows a canal at the southern side in Montura.

Lapp said both plans would meet the requirements of a 10% population difference between the largest populated district and the least populated district, which is required by law.

Immediately after the public hearing, the HCSD held its regular board meeting and voted 5-0 to adopt a resolution for the new boundaries in Proposal 4.

Hendry County BOCC will adopt its map during its regular meeting Dec. 14.
