Each year Hendry County Schools offer a summer program to students of migrant workers through the federal programs. This year the elementary students of LaBelle Schools studied cities, so to end the unit of study, students took a field trip around LaBelle to see how a city works together.

The trip started at City Hall where students learned about the responsibilities of the city commissioners and the Mayor. They were given a presentation by, Mike Boyle, who explained how the city was zoned for different operations of the city. Students learned that they can be more knowledgeable about what the city is doing if they attend the city commissioners meetings. Student Sebastian Raymundo said, “He like that we went to city hall and the the kids could ask questions.”

Next students visited the LaBelle fire station, students learned about different tools and trucks used by our city firemen and women. Firefighter Meghan also demonstrated what a firefighter looks like all geared up! “I liked that we went to the Fire Department and they showed us what the people put on,” said Christopher Ochoa-Ramirez.

Students then traveled to Walmart. The staff at Walmart was so excited to have us there for a tour, even making all of the students name badges! Students saw the storeroom and how it was organized, along with a tour of the entire store. They met different types of workers and saw how they did their jobs. Abraham Leon-ortiz said, “I liked that Walmart showed us Walmart and that we got to go to the break room and have snacks: cupcakes, oranges, and juice.”

Students finished the trip with a visit to the Zak Reyna playground and heard from the Parks and Rec Director about the different parks in the area. Brenda Hoots also came to the park and spoke to the students about the importance of voting for local, state and national positions so that the right people get in office to make the right decisions. Mrs. Hart from the Department of Recreation sent them on their way with a bag of summer goodies.
