As our lives are getting pretty much back to ‘normal’ it’s easy to forget the difficulties that we face through the storms in our lives. It’s important to remember the lessons that the hard times bring to us, however, and to take them into our daily practices, even when life is calm and breezy. By embodying these lessons as principles to live by we can use them as tools to get us through the next storms of our life.
This is why I felt so inspired to write the 5 sutras to weather any storm based on my experiences and observations during Hurricane Irma.
So far we have discussed the first three sutras. If you’ve missed them feel free to email me and I’ll make sure that you get them all!
The first three sutras are as follows: Boarding up your energy field like boarding up windows, True Power comes from within, and Planning is futile compared to alignment and flow.
This week we will discuss the fourth sutra: Control the things you can control and surrender the things that you can’t control.
This concept is a continuation of the third sutra which calls us to surrender our planning to a plan that’s greater than our own when the circumstances are unpredictable and can make our planning seem inapplicable.
There is a true strength to be found in surrender. When you are able to surrender the things that you cannot control you release a lot of resistance that blocks the universal flow of all the blessings that would flow naturally to you. It is in this state of ‘allowing’ that true miracles can occur in your life experience. “A Course In Miracles” defines a miracle as a shift in perception from fear to love, and so, when we shift our perception from the fear based approach of trying to manipulate things that are beyond our control (fearful that only WE know the best possible solutions and outcomes for our lives) and surrender the outcome to the care of the a greater plan we shift to a more loving perception and things begin to change!
This brings me to ‘control the things you can control’. What can we control you may ask? The one thing that we can always have control over no matter the circumstance, situation, or storm that we are facing is our thoughts. During times of uncertainty and insecurity we always have the ability to choose our thoughts. When we choose to align our thoughts with the higher frequency thoughts of love, joy, truth, grace, compassion, and forgiveness we will find that surrendering the things that are out of our control comes easily and quite naturally.
When we do live in this way, we not only experience a huge sense of relief, but life begins to get really groovy, as my teacher and mentor Gabrielle Bernstein likes to say. This is the ultimate formula to achieve more happiness in our lives!
