USPS warns about scams

Posted

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is warning the public of a new scam. "If you receive a text claiming to be from USPS about a package 'awaiting action,' please delete it immediately and do not open the link. These messages have no affiliation with USPS and compromise your personal data if clicked."

The post office does not have your phone number, stated a spokesperson from USPS. "We will never call you."

The USPS website lists some things to look for to help you avoid scams.

  • Do you feel pressured to act now? High pressure phrases like, "This opportunity won't last." and "Contact us or face legal action." are a hallmark of scammers.
  • Can you identify a suspicious package? Excessive postage and an unknown return address are signs of potentially suspicious mail.
  • Do you respond to spam or unsolicited emails? Unwanted emails or emails from unknown senders could be an attempt to phish for your private information and steal your identity.
  • Did you sign your credit card? Sign new credit cards received through the mail immeddiately, before someone else does.
  • Are your children safe? Know who communicates with your child online and monitor their computer usage.
