Martial Arts Club ‘kicks’ in big donation

Posted

After 12 long years, the FGCU Martial Arts Club is closing due to low interest from students at the University. When word spread about the club’s fate, former FGCU student and recent FSU Alumni, Jonathan Argueta stepped in to help organize a donation to the Immokalee Sports Complex.

With the help of Anna Mullen, who is the club’s outgoing President and Andrew Funari, Assistant Director of Sport Programs at FGCU, the club was able to identify equipment that could be best used in Immokalee.

At a small ceremony Wednesday, Mullen and Funari presented Said Gomez, Parks Supervisor at the Immokalee Sports Complex, with a donation of equipment including shirts, wrestling mats, headgear, arm/shin guards, and boxing gloves along with a check for $967.

Gomez said that he was very happy to accept the donation on behalf of the Immokalee Sports Complex and invited Mullen and Funari to a follow up visit at the Complex to see how their donations will be used.

This donation is important to Argueta who also calls Immokalee home. “The Immokalee Sports Complex will now have much more equipment in house in order to facilitate a greater variety of programs and exercises,” Argueta said.
