Maryland master mechanic returns to make Immokalee marvelous

Once a master mechanic, who always had a passion for serving people, Jonas Mervilus grew up in Immokalee and graduated from Immokalee High School in 2009. He went on to attend the University of Maryland. As a mechanic, he often witnessed people in financial crisis when faced with unexpected car repairs. Mervilus then founded a company known as MySpeedyX in his basement in 2015.

It began as a discount membership program, focused on recognizing teachers who are underpaid and unappreciated. He developed the platform where teachers could be given the help and guidance that they provided to students day in and day out, and the project grew into so much more than that.

“MySpeedyX couldn’t stop there; we are on a mission to impact the economy altogether! We align with community partners who care. To provide our members with an experience worth flexing about,” the company’s website explains. “MySpeedyX is now the world’s leading Employee Assistance Program providing exclusive employee benefits for businesses to reward their staff. Teachers remain on the front line receiving a free membership on behalf of our Flexsters!”

Currently, Mervilus is working to relocate his family from Baltimore, back to Immokalee. He has big plans to give back to the community he grew up in. He has been doing everything from holding town halls and setting up a grant program for youth in need of sports equipment, and for high school students to pursue college, trade schools, or entrepreneurship.

“Not every student will make it to the NFL or even get the opportunity to see outside the walls of Immokalee,” Mervilus explained. He wants to make sure he gives Immokalee youth every chance he can to realize their potential.

He also says that he won’t stand for corruption in his hometown. “Every business and nonprofit in Immokalee will be investigated and evaluated.” He explained that he has hired private investigators to expose any possible corruption that may be occurring, and to put a stop to it.

Looking forward to big developments in the near future, Mervilus is working with a large number of investors and community leaders with a goal of improving quality of life throughout the community.
