Special needs shelter opens at 5 p.m.

Naples, Fla. — The special needs shelter has been activated by Collier County to assist those individuals and families who need such services in the event of an emergency or disaster. The shelter will open at 5 p.m. Those who have family members with special needs should take extra measures to ensure their preparedness in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.

This shelter is only for those who have preregistered with Emergency Management.

Families preparing for a special needs shelter should ensure that a caregiver is present and make sure to pack the following:
-- Minimum three-day supply of medications

-- Bedding, including a blanket and pillow
-- Any necessary medical equipment
-- Eyeglasses and hearing aids
-- Non-perishable dietary items
-- A flashlight and radio
-- Personal care products
-- Important papers (including an I.D. with current address)

Local emergency management agencies are responsible for the designation and operation of special needs shelters during times of emergency or disaster. County health departments assist the local emergency management agency with regard to the management of medical services in special needs shelters.
