Students First - HLE participates in virtual STREAM

Can students really make snow storms? In a jar, sure! How about magic crystals? No problem!

On Tuesday, Dec. 8, staff, students, and families at Highlands Elementary School (HLE) participated in a virtual STREAM night. You may remember our use of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). The Hawks took it one step further adding the “R” for Reading!

Thanks to the coordination of HLE science coach Jolie Wilkinson, HLE math coach Michelle Garafola, and the entire STREAM action team, students were able to choose two of the 18 activities presented such as making snowflake slime, creating a winter wonderland (with instant snow), or joining a live dance party! The HLE Student Lighthouse Team created short videos about unique scientists to start each session, celebrating their diverse backgrounds and pathways to great discoveries. Teachers then led hands-on explorations and experiences, all from behind computer screens.

This is just one example of how schools are adjusting events and learning opportunities in light of the health pandemic. We are happy to report that more than 200 families participated in the event and shared their night with HLE! Thank you to everyone involved — you are all a shining example of synergy!

Before we sign off, we would like to remind everyone that there will be no school beginning Monday, Dec. 21. Students will return to school on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021. We wish everyone a joyous winter break and a Happy New Year!
