Covid booster shots available for those age 18 and up

TALLAHASSEE -- The Florida Department of Health announced Nov. 19 that COVID-19 booster shots are now available for those over the age of 18 who received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines at least six months ago.

FDOH recommends booster shots for those ages 50 and older and those ages 18 and older who live in a longterm care setting. Anyone over the age of 18 who wishes to receive a booster shot may get one.

You may choose which COVID-19 vaccine you receive as a booster. Some people may prefer the vaccine type they originally received. Others may prefer to get a different vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations allow for this type of “mix and match” of vaccines.

Booster shots are also now approved for those who received the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. FDOH advises: “All people ages 18 years and older who received a J&J/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at least 2 months ago should get a booster shot, for a total of two shots. A single dose of the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine has lower vaccine effectiveness compared to two doses.”

Florida had a 2.6% new positivity rate for the COVID-19 virus for Nov. 12-18, according to the Florida Department of Health report released Nov. 5.

About 68% of Floridians over age 5 have been vaccinated with at least one shot, according to the report. Vaccination rates by age groups are:

• 5-11: 6%
• 12-19: 56%;
• 20-29: 57%;
• 30-39: 66%;
• 40-49: 74%:
• 50-59: 79%;
• 60-64: 86%;
• 65+: 88%.

For Nov. 12-18, vaccination rates around the lake were:

• Glades County: 49%;
• Hendry County: 53%;
• Martin County: 65%;
• Okeechobee County: 47%;
• Palm Beach County: 71%.

Around the lake, new case positivity for the week was:

• Glades County: two new cases, 3.9% new positivity rate:
• Hendry County: 26 new cases, 3.5% new positivity rate:
• Martin County, 61 new cases, 2.7% new positivity rate;
• Okeechobee County, 8 new cases, 2.2% new positivity rate;
