Fresh Access Bucks double the value for SNAP

Posted

SNAP recipients can get double the value of their benefits when they purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from some Florida markets.

The United States Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP – formerly known as the food stamp program) provides assistance to low income households. Recipients receive electronic cards which they can use to purchase food in authorized retail stores.

Fresh Access Bucks is an incentive program that increases the purchasing power of SNAP benefits to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Participants receive $1 in Fresh Access Bucks for every $1 of SNAP benefits used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetatives at a participating market, up to $40 per day, doubling the value of their benefits.

The program is designed to help make SNAP benefits go farther and give low income Floridians more access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

In the Lake Okeechobee area, there are two participating markets:

• Ferrell’s Market South, 900 State Road 78 West, Okeechobee, FL 34974; and,

• Ferrell’s Market, 820 NW Park St, Okeechobee, FL 34972.

In addition, United Farmers Alliance has a pickup location at the Indiantown Boys & Girls Club, 17375 Palm Beach St Rd, Indiantown, FL 34956. For information about ordering food from UFA, go online to UFA.farm.
