All other ground is sinking sand

One of the most important things in life is the foundation upon which we build our lives. Jesus talked about that in Matthew’s Gospel. After several chapters of teaching and parables, Jesus says to his followers: “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on a rock.” Then he tells the story of such a man who had built his house on a rock, and when the rains and floods came, the house did not budge. But as for the house built on sand, it was lost when the first storm hit! And Jesus said, “…and great was its fall!”

Jesus’ examples are always clearly understood. Jesus must be the foundation upon which we build our lives. Jesus must be the rock upon which we live, move, and have our being. It can be no other way. It took some time to grasp the importance of a spiritual foundation. But now I find that every aspect of life is easier to handle, every crisis is more manageable, with a life built upon the solid rock of Jesus. And in the words of an old hymn: My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand; All other ground is sinking sand.
